After completing your studies in Australia, international students can apply for various post-study work permits to gain work experience in the country. These permits are part of the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), which includes several streams:
Post-Study Work Stream: This stream is for international students who have completed a higher education degree (bachelor’s, master’s, PhD) from an Australian university. The stay duration varies from 2 to 6 years, depending on the degree level and field of study. For example, bachelor’s degrees typically offer a 2-year stay, while master’s degrees offer 3 years, and PhDs offer 6 years. Graduates in priority sectors like STEM, Healthcare, IT, and Education may receive longer stays.
Graduate Work Stream: This stream is for students who have completed a vocational education course (TAFE, diploma, or trade course). The stay duration is up to 18 months, extended to 2 years for Hong Kong and UK citizens. This visa allows students to gain skilled work experience in relevant industries.
Replacement Stream: This stream is for individuals who held a 485 visa but lost time due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. It allows them to regain lost time and continue working in Australia.
After completing your studies and gaining work experience through a post-study work visa, international students can pursue permanent residency in Australia through several pathways:
Skilled Migration Pathway: This pathway involves applying for a Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) or a Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190). Students must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and meet the required points based on their qualifications, work experience, and English language proficiency. The Australian government uses the Skill Select system to process these applications.
Employer Sponsored Pathway: This involves obtaining a job offer from an Australian employer who is willing to sponsor the student’s visa application. The employer must nominate the student for a visa under the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) or other employer-sponsored visa programs.
General Skilled Migration (GSM) Program: This program requires students to have relevant work experience and meet specific skill assessment criteria. It is a competitive pathway that involves accumulating points for qualifications, language proficiency, and work experience.
To increase their chances of obtaining PR, students should focus on gaining relevant work experience, improving their English language skills, and accumulating points under the GSM program. The process typically takes 2 to 4 years, depending on individual circumstances.
