Establish in 1818.  SLU was initially founded as the Saint Louis Academy.

Founded by Louis William Valentine DuBourg, SLU is the oldest university west of the Mississippi River and the second-oldest Jesuit university in the United States. SLU offers over 90 bachelor’s programs and over 125 master’s and doctoral programs through its 13 colleges and schools. The university has a global presence with a campus in Madrid, Spain. SLU is recognized for its world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and commitment to faith and service.

In the 2023–2024 academic year, SLU had an enrollment of 15,204 students. The student body includes 8,502 undergraduate students and 6,702 graduate students. Students come from all 50 U.S. states and 96 countries.
