Post Study Work Permit

After completing their studies in the USA, international students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). This temporary employment authorization allows students to work in the USA in a job related to their field of study.

Eligibility: Students must have valid F-1 status and have completed at least one academic year of study at a U.S. institution certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

Duration: OPT typically allows students to work for up to 12 months after completing their degree. Students in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) can apply for a 24-month extension, allowing them to work for a total of up to 36 months.

Application Process: Students must apply for OPT before completing their studies, and the application must be received by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) within 90 days before or up to 60 days after completing their degree.

PR Option After Study Work Permit

After gaining work experience through OPT, international students can pursue permanent residency in the USA through several pathways:

Employment-Based Visas: This is a common pathway for international students. They need a valid job offer from a U.S. employer who must sponsor their visa application. The employer must file a labor certification (PERM) and then an I-140 petition with USCIS. Once approved, the student can apply for a Green Card by filing Form I-485 for Adjustment of Status.
